In a yoga class, SATYANANDA YOGA® emphasizes the development of awareness, training of conscious breathing and a gentle and safe management of the physical body. A typical yoga class in the Satyananda system starts with a brief meditation, followed by asana and pranayama (physical postures and breathing techniques). The class ends with Satyananda Yoga Nidra® or shavasana (deep relaxation) and/or pratyahara meditation. The practices are usually not demonstrated.
The training of teachers of the Satyananda system of yoga is thorough and time intensive. They instruct asana, pranayama, yoga nidra, shavasana and pratyahara meditation in a precise way and according to the individual needs of the students.
They have detailed knowledge of human anatomy to be able to respond in class to students with physical limitations. They have extensive knowledge of yoga physiology, psychology and philosophy and are able to impart that knowledge to their students.
